Kung Fu Panda 3 took in $41 million at the box office this weekend, easily chopping down newcomers. That opening, though, is softer than its predecessors, with the original having opened to $60.2 million in 2008 and Kung Fu Panda 2 earning $47.7 million in 2011, according to Box Office Mojo.

In second and third place were The Revenant and Star Wars: The Force Awakens respectively, a holdover effect analysts say is likely attributable to snowstorms that crippled the East Coast last week. Disney's The Finest Hours took fourth place with $10.3 million while Ride Along 2 rounded out the Top 5 with $8.3 million.

Despite its performance, Kung Fu Panda 3 still remains in third place for the best January opening ever, behind second place Ride Along, which took $41.5 million in 2014.
