Box Office: The Croods, Olympus Has Fallen Have Strong Debuts

Animated film The Croods soared to the top spot at the box office this weekend, with an impressive $44.7 million haul in its opening weekend, Box Office Mojo reports. But coming in second with a surprisingly strong $30.5 million showing was Olympus Has Fallen, the action thriller about a White House takeover starring Morgan Freeman and Gerard Butler.

The two films bumped Oz the Great and Powerful and The Call down to third and fourth place, respectively. Oz still managed to rake in $22 million in its third week, while The Call dropped off nearly 50 percent from its debut last week with $8.7 million.

Rounding out the top five was another newbie, Admission. The Tina Fey/Paul Rudd comedy had an underwhelming debut with earnings of $6.4 million in its first weekend, which marks the lowest debut for Fey in a live-action film, Box Office Mojo notes.

Though it's technically in its second week, Spring Breakers expanded from three theaters to more than 1,000 this weekend, landing in sixth place with $5 million. It was followed by The Incredible Burt Wonderstone in seventh place with $4.3 million, a nearly 60 percent dropoff from its opening weekend last week.

The final three films in the Top 10 were Jack the Giant Slayer($3 million), Identity Thief ($2.5 million) and Snitch ($1.9 million).
