"Dancing With the Stars" judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli coach song-and-dance teams in a competition to find the ultimate performance group.
  • Ask Matt | 2/22/2008
Q: I'm confused as to why Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann, a show with "dance" in its very title, is giving the winning team a "recording contract"! I know the dancers had to be able to sing, and in fact some singers who weren't great dancers were chosen because it was thought they could more easily brush up their dancing than could good dancers who couldn't sing (which, in the main, has proved true). But why a recording contract? And how do they do that for a team? Are they going to record ... read more

Criminy! Are they kidding? I was willing to give Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann a shot because I respect them and was looking forward to something new while waiting for the strike to end. What was I treated to this week? A 30-minute recap of last week's 90-minute show. Sorry, judges, you lost me. The show's producers have shown a complete lack of respect for the viewers' time. I'd rather watch American Gladiators than another 30-minute recap. read more
  • American Idol Watch: The Auditions Begin | Roush Dispatch | 1/16/2008
Most years, I find myself cringing at the very spectacle that drives zillions of people to their TV sets: the American Idol auditions, a circus of exhibitionistic freaks, delusional show-offs, sad sacks all too willing to be mocked, characters who looked like they woke up too late for Mardi Gras, and the usual gamut. And the occasional promising singer.Maybe it's strike fatigue, or the fact that I've just sat stupefied for two weeks watching the far more insipid antics of the preening judges Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba, who've quickly worn out their welcome as the dim-bulb guiding lights of the so-far-misleadingly titled Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann. But Tuesday night's launch of the seventh season of American Idol, with two hours spent sifting through the flotsam and jetsam of tryouts in Philadelphia, felt more entertaining and less punishingly cruel than in years past.If anything, the would-be Idols generally behaved worse than the judges, even the notoriously puckish... read more
