This classy sci-fi hit revolves around the sudden reappearance of 4400 missing people. All were presumed dead or reported missing over several decades, and many return to their former lives on Earth---but with startling powers. Among those assigned to unravel their mystery is an earnest crime investigator whose nephew is one of the returned. The cable drama, originally slated to run only as a five-part miniseries, garnered big ratings for USA and was added to its regular roster.
  • V Redux — and Its Alien Lizards — to Invade ABC | Today's News: Our Take | 10/10/2008
V, the '80s miniseries movies and TV show about lizard aliens disguised as humans who invade the Earth, will be re-imagined for the Alphabet Network. The new adaptation will be written by The 4400 co-creator/exec producer Scott Peters. Warner Bros. TV, which was behind the original miniseries and TV show, is once again producing the project along with Peters and HDFilms principal Jace Hall, reports Variety. Peters, who was a double Emmy nominee for The 4400 wasn't interested in doing... read more 20 Comments

  • 4400 Fans Plant Sunflower Seeds on USA Network | Today's News: Our Take | 2/1/2008
Fans of the recently canceled The 4400 hope to pull a Jericho by dumping at least 1,700 bags of sunflower seeds (the snack of choice for Dr. Kevin Burkhoff) on USA Network executives. Most of the orders are being fulfilled by Giants Snacks LLC, a wee little eight-man operation based out of Minnesota — by no coincidence, the home state of 4400 lead Joel Gretsch.Note to network execs everywhere: The next time you create a culty show, give one character a penchant for caviar. You'll thank me... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • I had not seen a letter about ... | Matt Roush | 1/28/2008
Question: I had not seen a letter about this, so I thought I'd send an R.I.P. to three recently canceled sci-fi shows, only one of which surprised me. I know you didn't like Journeyman and are tired of people talking about it, but people seemed to miss the fact that that show should not been compared to Quantum Leap or Life on Mars, but rather The Time Traveller's Wife. That's why the relationships took center stage, and I don't think enough has been said about the chemistry between the cast... read more be the first to leave a comment

  • Updated: USA Expresses "Deep Sadness" Over Dual Cancellations | Today's News: Our Take | 12/19/2007
UPDATE: I just got my hands on an exclusive statement from Jeff Wachtel, USA Exec VP Original Programming, regarding the demise of Dead Zone and The 4400: "We wish we could keep all our great shows alive forever. But we feel we need to give some of our new shows a platform to grow, and it's with great sadness that we say goodbye to two shows that had a great run and helped create the resurgence of original programming on our network and on all of cable."My original story appears below.Next time... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • The summer-season shows on ... | Matt Roush | 9/28/2007
Question: The summer-season shows on USA (Burn Notice, Monk, Psych, The 4400), as well as Eureka on Sci Fi and The Closer on TNT, were so awesome I find I'm not so excited for the "new" fall shows. The season finale last spring of Ugly Betty was such a downer, such a change from the normal mood of the show, that it really turned me off. Grey's Anatomy was a mess other than the Alex and Bailey characters. I am puzzled by the buzz that Pushing Daisies is getting. As someone who lost a... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • I have really been impressed ... | Matt Roush | 9/21/2007
Question: I have really been impressed by this season of The 4400 and I fear that it is being ignored. I'm tired of shows not getting the attention and recognition they deserve just because of the network they're on. Honestly, who cares about the network? While I doubted the fate of the show last year and wasn't even sure whether I would return as a viewer, this season has more than proved me wrong, with spectacular writing, acting and plot development. Even when I thought I couldn't be more... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • I'm not sure you actually get ... | Matt Roush | 9/14/2007
Question: I'm not sure you actually get why we "greedy" fans are so upset about the Battlestar Galactica scheduling issues. Unlike all the long-hiatus shows you mentioned in your recent column, these episodes will have already been written and filmed, even gone through postproduction, and the Sci Fi Channel would be simply refusing to show them, just to package the DVDs separately and stretch the shelf life of their flagship show. Yes, patience is a virtue and we'll get the episodes... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Is it true they are going to ... | Matt Roush | 9/7/2007
Question: Is it true they are going to split the Battlestar Galactica season up so that we won't have a conclusion until 2009? To quote Baltar, "I can't physically take that!" Please find out the truth. Answer: The truth, at least as far as I can get anyone at the Sci Fi Channel to confirm at this point, is that no decision has officially been made yet on the scheduling of the final season. But I got a handful of panicked questions about this rumor that Battlestar will be split... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Cable's Summer Hits a New High | Matt Roush | 8/20/2007
The ridiculous (in a good way) ratings for Disney Channel's multiple record-breaking weekend launch of High School Musical 2 was just the most spectacular reminder of what a great TV summer this has been — if you have cable. Not even a big hit like TNT's The Closer can match HSM2's numbers, and some of the best series, like AMC's mesmerizing Mad Men, are only doing so-so. But that's only to be expected given the glut of programming on many nights — including Thursdays, when Mad Men... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • OK, I know it's not your ... | Matt Roush | 8/20/2007
Question: OK, I know it's not your channel or your kind of show (it is a chick thing!), but I was wondering: Have you previewed any episodes of Lifetime's Side Order of Life? Though it's a little cheesy, with its Ally McBeal-esque antics (not done half as well...), the heart of this show is very sweet and genuine. Diana-Maria Riva is absolutely amazing as Vivy. The way she makes me laugh and cry, portraying a woman striving to live a normal life despite having cancer, is a prime example of why... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Big Reunions Ahead on The 4400, Ugly Betty | Today's News: Our Take | 8/6/2007
Did you see this one coming, 4400 fans? Young Lily reunites with Richard (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, who himself returns this Sunday) when original cast member Laura Allen appears on the USA Network series' Aug. 19 episode. How can this be, since Lily (as played by Tippi Hedren) died of old age last season? Watch for the scoop on that and more in my upcoming Interviews & Features Q&A with Ms. Allen.... • I would like to comment on ... | Matt Roush | 7/9/2007
Question: I would like to comment on the issue of reruns. I got hooked on both Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy by watching reruns. This summer I am happily catching up on episodes of Shark that I missed during the regular season. I think the networks are making a big mistake by dumping reruns in favor of endless, awful reality shows. No wonder so many folks are opting for Netflix and the cable networks' alternate offerings like The 4400 — a show that doesn't get enough kudos in my opinion. • Given that the seasons of The ... | Matt Roush | 7/9/2007
Question: Given that the seasons of The 4400 are so far apart, it would have helped greatly if the USA Network had run a marathon of the last few episodes prior to the new season starting. I am not the only one who went into the first episode of the season not remembering what happened at the end of last season. Answer: No kidding. One of the editors here asked me what I knew about Promicin, and I was like, "Huh?" I haven't had time to dig into this new season yet, but before I do,... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • DVD Pick of the Week: May 8, 2007 | Today's News: Our Take | 5/3/2007
It's Wednesday, so you know what that means.... It's "Pick of the Week" time!May 8 brings us a couple of Season 1 sets, a couple of complete series sets, with the only volume release being Voltron.I'm drawn toward choosing from two releases this week — Cagney & Lacey Season 1 and The 4400 Season 3. I decided to go with Cagney because it's a long-awaited series, though The 4400 has more bonus material, a better transfer and better audio. But it's a newer show, so that's to be... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • January 18, 2007: Playthings | TV Show Recaps | 1/19/2007
"Playthings" is probably the closest a Season 2 episode has come to a Season 1 standalone episode. The first half of this season just had a different feel to it. Because of the death of Big Daddy Winchester, each episode was blanketed in grief as well as mucho mucho angst. I've pretty much loved most of these episodes (especially "In My Time of Dying," "Crossroad Blues," and "Croatoan"), but the cases they tackled felt different because the boys were also in the midst of mourning as well as... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Are you watching The 4400? ... | Matt Roush | 8/14/2006
Question: Are you watching The 4400? For some reason, this show has defied the odds for me. By Season 3, usually I'm up in arms, citing inconsistencies and worrying that a good show is going down the drain. With this show, I keep being pleasantly surprised with every episode. It has hung in there and continued to deliver compelling material. Obviously this isn't the bestest show ever (it certainly doesn't compare to, say, Battlestar Galactica or Veronica Mars), but it's truly better than a lot... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Am I mistaken, or are Colin ... | Matt Roush | 8/7/2006
Question: Am I mistaken, or are Colin Ferguson (Jack Carter of Eureka), Joel Gretsch (Tom Baldwin of The 4400) and Mark Valley (Brad Chase of Boston Legal) the same person using different names? Answer: You're not the only one to write in about the resemblance between Ferguson and Gretsch, but since you added the similarly square-jawed Valley to the mix, let me just say that if they could bottle the water from that particular handsome-leading-man gene pool, someone could make a fortune. (And... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Summer TV is always bad, but ... | Matt Roush | 6/30/2006
Question: Summer TV is always bad, but this year I find myself watching virtually nothing. OK, I have used the rerun schedule to catch a few eps of My Name Is Earl (but not if I already saw them), and I have rewatched some Grey's Anatomy episodes, but otherwise I watch nothing. I can't face Gilmore Girls reruns this year. Somehow Lost reruns don't cut it. I'd rather pull my fingernails out one by one than watch moronic reality shows. I don't have cable. Am I doomed until September? Is there... read more be the first to leave a comment
