Blink and You'll Miss This Gerard Way Easter Egg in The Umbrella Academy

There were a few significant differences between Netflix'sUmbrella Academy series and its comic origins, but the show still made sure to pay homage to the man who started it all.

Gerard Way, the rock star and writer who created the Umbrella Academy comic book series alongside illustrator Gabriel Bá, brought his musical skills to Netflix's Umbrella Academy soundtrack. Alongside fellow My Chemical Romance bandmate Ray Toro, he performed the accompanying covers of Simon and Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter" and The Turtles' "Happy Together."

However, there's a much more subtle tribute to Way in the show's very first episode that fans on Reddit managed to spot.

When Vanya (Ellen Page) finds a copy of her own memoir Extra Ordinary: My Life as Number Seven on the mansion's shelf, she flips to the back cover for a moment. If you pause at that moment and look closely enough at the text, you'll see that it's Gerard Way whose name appears below the blurb, which reads: "An incredible read... a revealing portal into the amazing life of Vanya Hargreeves and the life she has lived... I couldn't put it down!"

Interestingly, Vanya's story in the comics enjoys quite a drastic shift onscreen, since in Way's comic the character is brainwashed into becoming the super-villain White Violin before being stopped -- in much more dramatic fashion -- by Allison.

The memoir in question here, though, will still be familiar to fans of Way's books, so it's certainly fitting that his name be included in the inscription for a story of his own making. That way, we know his high praise is authentic.
