Dexteralum David Zayas has landed a recurring role on Fox's new drama Gotham, Deadline.com reports.

Based on DC Comics characters, Gotham explores the origin stories of the Caped Crusader's eventual ally James Gordon (Benjamin McKenzie), a detective with the Gotham City Police Department, and his battle with the villains who made the city famous.

Gotham won't "break the canonical iron truths" of Batman mythology

Zayas will play DC Comics character Sal Maroni, a dangerous gangster who will come to blows with Carmine Falcone (John Doman) in a bid for control of the city. Maroni, who was portrayed by Eric Roberts in The Dark Knight, is also behind the incident that disfigured Harvey Dent, turning him into Two-Face.

Gotham will premiere Monday, Sept. 22 at 8/7c on Fox. Check out a trailer for the series here.
