Sansa's Coronation Gown on Game of Thrones Pays Tribute to Another Queen

No matter what you might think of Game of Thrones' final season, we can probably all agree that the costumes were just divine. In fact, the sartorial elements even filled in the blanks when it came to Daenerys Targaryen's (Emilia Clarke) Mad Queen arc and helped inject some real eeriness into her final moments of the show.

Costume designer Michele Clapton was also responsible for creating some of Sansa Stark's (Sophie Turner) most riveting looks ever this season, and she sprinkled in quite a few clever homages to the people Sansa cared about most throughout the final stretch. Sansa's signature necklace, for example, contains a needle wink to Arya (Maisie Williams), her pre-season poster gown was a scaly nod to House Tully, and, most recently, her exquisite Queen in the North coronation gown is a subtle tribute to the only queen Sansa ever liked: Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer).

In a new Instagram post, Clapton explained some of the details of her design for Sansa's final gown, like the leaf embroidery and bodice structure that channels the fabled Godswood of Winterfell and the direwolf sigil worked into her sleeve and crown. She revealed that the fabric should be familiar to fans as well.

"The dress was made in the same fabric as the dark Sansa dress, which was the same fabric dyed that was used in [Margaery's] wedding dress to Joffrey," Clapton wrote. "Sansa had a bond with her."

It was Margaery who tried to make Sansa's life in King's Landing tolerable while she could, and she even attempted to arrange a marriage between Sansa and her own brother, Ser Loras (Finn Jones), so that she might move to Highgarden instead of continuing to be tormented by the Lannisters. Sansa might not have been a fan of the two most prominent queens on this show, but she certainly had a kinship with Margaery as a result of the character's kindness.

Imagine if the two had both been able to survive Cersei. Between Margaery's empathy and Sansa's practicality, the seven kingdoms would've been in pretty great shape with these two ladies at the helm.

It's also worth noting that several Game of Thrones fans have noticed a historical significance to Sansa's hairstyle in her final scene. Sansa's evolution as a character has often been reflected by her mane -- particularly when she attempted to adopt the top-heavy "Southern Lady" style upon arrival to King's Landing, and the look became something of a punishment in and of itself when things got ugly for her there. Sansa's loose locks at her coronation have drawn comparisons to the defiant look of Queen Elizabeth I, who also endured trauma but refused to be defined by it.
