DARK KNIGHT, THE
starstarstarstar
Even without Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker, Christopher Nolan's pitch-black sequel to BATMAN BEGINS (2005) would be a tour de force. But Ledger's mesmerizingly damaged agent provocateur is the film's dark heart, a presence so malevolently unpredictable that it remains palpable even when he's not on screen. • Warner Bros. Planning Dark Knight Re-Release | Movie News | 9/11/2008
Batman doesn't want Oscar voters to forget about him, or Heath Ledger. In a bid for Academy Award glory, Warner Bros. is planning to re-release The Dark Knight in January, right in the middle of Oscar voting season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As of right now, the studio is in talks to only reinstate the blockbuster in IMAX theaters. Knight, first released in July, has currently brought in $512 million domestically, placing it second behind Titanic on the all-time list. Should the pre-Oscar push result in a slew of nominations and wins — especially for the late Ledger — you can bet it will rack up even more moolah. And here's one more thing to note: Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 22 — the one-year anniversary of Ledger's death.Do you think The Dark Knight has any shot at Oscar? — Joyce EngUse our Online Video Guide for clips and interviews with Dark Knight stars. read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Will Two-Face Return for More Bat Action? | Movie News | 9/5/2008
It turns out Two-Face was a one-time deal. Aaron Eckhart says his villainous Dark Knight alter ego is "dead as a doornail" following his construction site plunge and will not pop up in future Christopher Nolan Bat-flicks."He ain't comin' back, baby," he told E! Online. "I asked Chris that question. He goes, 'You're dead.' Before I could even get the question out of my mouth, 'Hey Chris, am I...' 'You're dead.'"One person who was supposed to come back though? Heath Ledger's Joker, Eckhart confirmed. As for future bad guys (and gals), Cher's name has been tossed around as Catwoman, but Eckhart would prefer another Oscar winner to inherit Michelle Pfeiffer's purr-fect leather catsuit: Angelina Jolie."I thought that was a great idea," he said. "I'd like to be in that one."Too bad you won't be. — Joyce Eng read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Tropic Thunder Storms Box Office Once Again | Movie News | 9/1/2008
In a Labor Day weekend that boasted five little-buzzed-about new releases, Tropic Thunder managed to hold on to its place at the top of the domestic box office for the third week in a row. According to Variety, Ben Stiller's Hollywood-spoofing comedy earned $11.5 million dollars, bringing its total haul to $83.8 million. Newcomer sci-fi action flick and Vin Diesel starrer Babylon A.D. came in at No. 2 with $9.8 million. The Dark Knight bounced back up to No. 3 this week, taking in another $8.8 million to pass the $500 million mark, the only movie except Titanic to accomplish such a feat. The House Bunny's $8.3 million took fourth, and Don Cheadle's Traitor rounded out the Top 5 with $7.9 million.Theater traffic was slow overall, despite five new releases. Though the final four-day weekend numbers are still forthcoming, it seems this summer's final outing will fall well short of last year's take when Rob Zombie's Halloween remake earned $30.6 million as the top movie. — Adam... read more be the first to leave a comment

The Dark Knight ruled theaters, but the summer box office was not dark at all.According to The Hollywood Reporter, summer 2008 can go down in history with a record domestic gross, thanks to the $300 million-plus hauls of Knight, Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.Though last summer had four films cross the $300 milestone, Knight made up for the deficit with its own record-setting performance, which includes four consecutive weeks at No. 1.By the close of Labor Day weekend, domestic intake is projected to surpass $4 billion. read more be the first to leave a comment
