Question: I'm tired of all the complaints about the just-announced Emmy hosts, reality-host nominees Ryan Seacrest, Tom Bergeron, Jeff Probst, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel. I suspect they're absolutely the perfect choices for the upcoming awards show for a few reasons. First, the possible upcoming actors' strike. If it happens, all of these five reality stars will still be able to host, as they're not SAG. Second, the recent writers' strike. Reality TV had to come to the rescue when scripted series ran out. This is the way for the Emmys to thank reality shows for saving the networks during that strike. And third, these reality hosts are great on their feet, and most of them are used to the rigors of live TV. Should be a great show, don't you think? Answer: I've got nothing against positive thinking, but in this case, I'm not so sure. Five hosts, really? The Emmys: A Dramatic Shift Toward Cable | Matt Roush | 7/17/2008
If you heard someone momentarily flatlining in the audience at the reading of the Emmy nominations Thursday morning, that was me. They were announcing the best drama series candidates and I was mostly on board as I checked my list in the back of the TV Academy theater. Damages. Yay! House. OK. Boston Legal. I don’t approve, but I’m no longer surprised. Lost. OMG! Dexter. OM-Freaking-G! Wait. That’s five. Surely they didn’t leave out . . . And they didn’t. AMC’s dazzling Mad Men, the last to be announced, not only made the cut, it made history. With 16, it’s the most nominated drama of the year, and with FX’s Damages (seven nominations total), represents basic cable’s first-ever breakthrough into the top tier of Emmy accolades for best series. Jeers: Slow Dancing with the Stars | Cheers & Jeers | 3/18/2008
Jeers to Dancing with the Stars for setting a new record for prime-time-killing filler. Seriously, do we need to sit through 92 mind- (and butt-)numbing minutes to watch six contestants do their two-minute routines? And there isn't even an elimination the first week! Factor in the corny "first meeting" segments, Tom Bergeron's high-larious ad libs and Samantha Harris' insipid post-dance interviews, and there's more stretching on the air than behind the scenes on this show. At least you can fast-forward through the vast majority of the episodes without missing anything. Bergeron Goes Dining with the Eco-conscious Stars | Today's News: Our Take | 2/1/2008
Tom Bergeron — who already minds the store on Dancing with the Stars and that Funniest Videos show — has a third gig lined up, hosting the new Planet Green series Supper Club. Per Variety, Bergeron will host dinner parties featuring celebrity-chef-prepared "eco-friendly meals" and attended by celebrities, politicians, authors, journalists and scholars.
